Cycology at MTN ScienCentre
The new exhibition entitled Cycology: the Science of the Bicycle will
be on display at the MTN ScienCentre in Cape Town from 9th February to 31st
May 2002. Don't miss this unique show!!
We have had great fun putting this exhibition together, and we are sure that
you will find it both entertaining and educational.
The exhibition has five components:
- a unique display of over 80 historic and modern bikes and trikes
from 1869 to the present
- 20 full-colour A0 educational banners, produced by MTN ScienCentre
staff, that trace the evolution of the bicycle
- a collection of deliberately mis-engineered 'wacky bikes' that the
public are invited to ride (with difficulty). These bikes illustrate why
bikes are made the way they are!
- various interactive displays that teach you about the physics and
mechanics of the bicycle
- an exhibition of art and craft on the subject of the bicycle
- a living bicycle mechanics workshop, courtesy of Afribike
- a spinning studio, courtesy of Cyclelab.
During the week leading up to the Argus Cycle Tour (Life Cycle Week; 5-10th
March) we will be holding special lectures, demon-strations and workshops on
the subject of the bicycle. You may also take a guided tour of the
exhibition with James Starley, inventor of the safety bicycle (aka Mike
Bruton). Watch the press for further details.
