Unizul Science Centre
Richards Bay, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa
The Unizul Science Centre is a branch of the University of Zululand, located
at the harbour city of Richards Bay, on the Kwazulu-Natal north coast. The
Auto Works
exhibit unveiled in May 2001 is a major installation attracting the crowds
to the centre.
USC Director Derek Fish impresses the visitors with liquid nitrogen.
USC presenter Alfred Tsipa presents shows in both isiZulu and English.
The skies herald the approaching completion of the Unizul Science Centre
Extensions! With a generous grant from the Department of Science and
Technology, a new 600 sq metre building is in progress, with completion
(and grand opening!) due for early October 2004. The building will
comprise a 400 sq metre display hall to house 40 new exhibits donated by
the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester; and 200 sq metres of
classroom and workshop space, which will also house KZN's only
planetarium.

It's happened at last - at 8 am on 2004 September 21 I was handed the keys
to our new building! The last load of rubbish leaves the new building.
Thomas More School (all the way from Kloof near Durban), were the first
school to enjoy a planetarium show in the new building, in the comfort of
our new, carpeted, air-conditioned classrooms. (I breathed a great sigh of
relief to see that the ceiling was made high enough to accommodate the
Starlab!) We have added 600 sq metres of space - 400 for exhibits and 200
for 3 multi-use classroom areas.
Mia Boiridy is a Canadian who recently spent more than a year working at
the Unizul Science Centre. You can read about some of her experiences at
